The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Invader Squadron is closing in on a major milestone: getting their A-26 Invader, Night Mission, back in the air in time for this year’s airshow season. After kicking off a dedicated restoration effort in 2021, the team has now entered the final phase of bringing this historic warbird back to flying status.

This aircraft was built in 1943 and was the 328th A26B built at the Douglas plant in Long Beach, California. It was delivered to the USAAF on December 8, 1944 and given the USAAF serial number of 41-39427.

What Happened So Far

Progress has ramped up in recent weeks. The left engine has been successfully installed, propellers are back from inspection and reattached, and the all-important gear swing tests have been completed. The aircraft’s required 100-hour inspection is also nearing completion—marking a key step toward airworthiness.

“We hope to fly it very soon and showcase Night Mission at numerous airshows this season,” said CAF Colonel and Invader Squadron Social Media Manager Karolina Marek.

Labor Of Love

The restoration has been a true labor of love, powered entirely by volunteers under the leadership of Squadron Leader Patrick Mahaffey and Maintenance Officer Steve Swift. Both are A&P-certified, pilot-in-command (PIC) rated on the A-26, and among the most experienced A-26 operators in the CAF. Their deep knowledge and hands-on involvement have been critical to the project’s success.

Beyond the wrench work, the squadron has been hard at work preparing the human side of the operation, too. A ground school session for both new and returning squadron members covered the A-26’s systems, flight procedures, and its combat legacy—ensuring everyone is mission-ready when Night Mission takes flight.

Recent Progress

Recent progress includes multiple engine runs, a series of taxi tests, and even a successful high-speed taxi test—all pointing toward a return to flight in the very near future. With the cowlings reinstalled and final inspections underway, Night Mission is on the runway to revival.

The Invader Squadron also participated in the CAF’s 2024 12 Planes of Christmas fundraiser, rallying supporters to raise more than $5,000 for the restoration. That momentum, both financial and emotional, has helped fuel the final push.
