At 96 years old, World War II veteran Bob Brocklehurst recently returned to the cockpit of a P-51 Mustang in Florida. With assistance, he climbed aboard the fighter type he once flew during the war, quickly settling back into a familiar environment. Once airborne, decades of separation faded as the sights, sounds, and handling of the aircraft brought back wartime memories.

During the flight, Brocklehurst requested basic aerobatic maneuvers, including a loop and a barrel roll. The aircraft’s response matched what he remembered, reflecting skills developed through years of military flying.

Brocklehurst served in the Aleutian Islands campaign, where extreme weather and rugged terrain made flying as dangerous as combat. His return to the Mustang offered a rare connection between living history and the aircraft that defined his wartime service.
