US Air Force C-130 Attacked With Axe at Shannon Airport
A United States Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft sustained significant structural damage at Shannon Airport in Ireland on April 11 after an intruder breached airside security and attacked the aircraft with a small axe. The incident occurred on the morning of April 11, with the individual gaining unauthorized access to a restricted section of the airfield and reaching the aircraft before airport personnel identified the breach.
What Happened
The C-130 had arrived the previous day following a transatlantic routing from Kansas with an intermediate stop in Canada. It was parked on a remote taxiway stand away from the main passenger apron when the incident occurred. Reports indicate the individual breached a perimeter fence and moved undetected across the airfield toward the remote parking position.
At approximately 9:45 a.m. the intruder climbed onto the aircraft’s wing using its lower structure and moved along the upper surface toward the fuselage. Video footage circulating online shows the individual moving along the wing root area near the junction between the wing and fuselage, in the vicinity of one of the turboprop engine nacelles. The wing root is a structurally critical area where the wing connects to the fuselage. The individual used the axe to strike the wing skin and adjacent fuselage sections before airport personnel responded and an emergency response was triggered.
The Damage
Authorities confirmed the C-130 sustained significant damage. Initial reports indicate multiple impact points on the upper wing surface and fuselage with visible dents and possible penetration of the aluminum skin. The full extent of the structural damage requires detailed inspection to assess before any determination can be made about the aircraft’s airworthiness or the cost of repairs.
