A Sudden Crash and Early Reports

On the morning of December 18, 2025, a small business jet made a tragic descent at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. The aircraft, a Cessna C550 model, was attempting to land at about 10:15 a.m. when it fell from the sky and struck the ground in a violent impact. Flames quickly spread around the wreckage, and the fire was visible across the runway area as local fire crews rushed to respond. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began an investigation into what caused the craft to come down in this way.

The Iredell County sheriff’s office confirmed that several people died in the crash. At this stage, the identities of those who lost their lives have not been publicly released, and authorities have not said how many survivors, if any, were found at the scene. The airport was closed after the accident because scattered debris blocked the runway and delayed other flights.

Ownership and Flight Path

Public records show that the jet was registered to a North Carolina company called GB Aviation Leasing LLC, which is connected with former racing driver Greg Biffle. Flight tracking data indicates that the plane originally took off from the same airport around 10:06 a.m. but soon turned back toward the runway before the crash occurred. It was listed on tracking services as planning to fly to Sarasota, Florida, before returning to Statesville.

Although the craft is tied to Biffle through the company’s records, officials have not confirmed whether he or any members of his family were aboard. As of the latest announcements, no official statement has come from the aircraft owner, and investigators are still trying to establish who was on the flight and why the plane ended up descending unexpectedly.

Witnesses and Conditions at the Scene

People living near the airport reported hearing a loud sound and then seeing flames shoot up from the location of the crash. One observer near the nearby Lakewood Golf Club noted that the plane seemed to be flying unusually low before it struck the ground. Emergency responders from multiple local agencies, including the sheriff’s department and highway patrol, were summoned to the site quickly after the impact.

Weather on the day included low clouds and some light rain, with visibility reported as poor in certain nearby areas. Media coverage was briefly disrupted when a news helicopter had to turn back because of fog. Authorities have said it is too soon to know whether these conditions had any part in the aircraft’s final approach.

Context and Ongoing Inquiry

Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles north of Charlotte, has been used for corporate flights and is familiar to regional air traffic, including teams from professional sports and business travel. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will gather flight data, examine the wreckage, and interview witnesses as they piece together what happened. This work may take weeks or months, as investigators review every available detail related to the crash.

According to public aviation records, at least five occupants were aboard the aircraft at the time of the accident. The Cessna C550 is designed to carry a small group of passengers and crew, but until the investigative agencies publish a full report, the exact sequence of events and technical reasons for the crash remain under examination.

Background on the Registered Owner

Greg Biffle, born in 1969, built a long competitive career in American stock car racing beginning in the mid-1990s. He achieved significant success in several racing series over more than a decade, with numerous wins and titles to his name. In later years, he pursued aviation interests alongside his business activities, as reflected in private aircraft registrations.

At this point, the investigation into the accident is active, and federal agencies have promised further updates as they analyze data and interview those connected to the flight.
