A Classic Name Meets New Design
The 2026 Republic F-47 Thunderbolt brings back a historic name with a modern twist. While it shares the name of the original World War II P-47 Thunderbolt, this new aircraft is a completely new platform. Designed as a multi-role fighter-bomber, it blends modern combat capabilities with a look inspired by its wartime namesake.
Made with lightweight composite materials and a reinforced airframe, the F-47 is built for speed, maneuverability, and survival in combat zones. It’s designed for missions like ground attack, close air support, and high-speed strikes—especially in places where threats are active and airstrips may not be ideal.

Modern Technology for Modern Missions
The F-47 uses advanced avionics, digital flight controls, and precise targeting systems. Powered by a modern afterburning turbofan engine, it can reach speeds above Mach 1.8. It performs especially well at low altitudes, which is useful for urban missions and tactical bombing.
Inside, the cockpit is fully digital with a glass display and eye-assisted targeting and navigation. Pilots can keep situational awareness even in intense battle conditions. The aircraft also has AESA radar, infrared sensors, and an electronic warfare suite that helps detect threats and respond to them quickly.
Built to Adapt and Carry Heavy Weapons
The F-47’s airframe includes six underwing hardpoints and multiple fuselage stations. This lets it carry a mix of weapons such as laser-guided bombs, anti-armor missiles, and cluster munitions. A 30mm rotary cannon is built into the fuselage for close air support, and optional fuel tanks or electronic pods can be added for longer missions or special operations.
Optional stealth coatings help reduce radar visibility when needed, though the F-47 is not a stealth fighter. Instead, its design focuses on durability, firepower, and versatility in many types of combat.

Smart Upgrades and Global Use
A major strength of the F-47 is its modular design. It can be updated quickly and adjusted for different mission needs. It supports satellite links, drone coordination, and joint military networks, making it useful in modern multi-domain operations.
Its structure allows for easier maintenance. Built-in diagnostic systems help reduce downtime, and this has made the aircraft attractive to allied air forces. Its low operating costs and reliability make it a strong choice for both offensive strikes and defensive missions.
A Fighter-Bomber for the Next War
In training exercises, the F-47 has shown it can stay airborne even with heavy damage. This makes it a reliable asset in harsh battle conditions. Although not designed to avoid radar detection, it stands out by carrying heavy weapons and staying active under fire.
The F-47 Thunderbolt continues the legacy of a famous aircraft, now reimagined for 21st-century warfare.
