Not What You Think!
Drogues are used for various purposes. This can be used to decrease speeds and even provide stability if the pilot needs it.
Many modern planes today feature this technology, with Eurofighter Typhoons and B-52 Stratofortresses being two of the most popular users.
In this video from an air show, we see an Su-57 deploy its drogue parachutes “way too early.” However, according to some commenters, this demonstration was actually intentional.
Operated by Chief Test Pilot Sergei Bogdan at the MAKS air show, the Su-57 pilot demonstrated the short field capability of the aircraft and the strength of its landing gear.
That’s why you didn’t see its gears buckle after that rough landing!
