Coughlin, a passionate volunteer and board member at the Aerodrome, was well-regarded within the aviation community. The aircraft he flew was a recreation of a notoriously maneuverable German fighter plane from 1918. Unfortunately, mechanical issues with the replica are suspected to have caused the crash, and an investigation is underway.

Some spectators initially believed the incident was part of the performance. Many fans remembered Coughlin fondly, sharing their condolences online. One enthusiast described him as “a great pilot” and expressed how deeply his loss would be felt among antique aircraft owners. Here’s one tribute video for Brian Coughlin thanks to YouTuber John Koptonak.

Coughlin had survived a previous crash in a 1915 Nieuport 11, escaping with minor injuries. His father had also served as an airman aboard the battleship New Jersey, continuing a family legacy of aviation.
