The Need for a New German Fighter

By 1944, Germany needed a high-altitude fighter that could take on Allied bombers and their escorts. The solution was the Focke-Wulf FW 190D “Dora.” Replacing the earlier radial engine with the Junkers Jumo 213 liquid-cooled V-12, the Dora finally gave the Luftwaffe the climb rate and speed it needed above 20,000 feet. With methanol-water injection, it could produce over 2,000 horsepower and reach nearly 380 mph at low altitude.

The Mustang’s All-Around Power

Across the skies, the American P-51 Mustang had already cemented its reputation as the Allies’ war-winning fighter. Its Packard-built Merlin engine—with a two-stage, two-speed supercharger—delivered reliable performance at both low and high altitudes. Combined with drop tanks, it had the range to escort bombers from England to Berlin and back, while still outperforming most German fighters in combat.

Speed, Climb, and Firepower Compared

In raw speed, both aircraft were closely matched. The Dora had an edge in climb rate, making it dangerous in vertical engagements. Its heavy armament—typically two 20 mm cannons and two machine guns—was designed to tear apart Allied bombers.

The Mustang, however, excelled in balance. Its handling was smooth, its high-speed dive superior, and its six .50 caliber machine guns were more than enough against enemy fighters. Just as importantly, it could fight at 30,000 feet without losing power, something the Dora still struggled with.

Which Fighter Came Out on Top?

In one-on-one combat, a skilled Dora pilot could hold his own and even best a Mustang under the right conditions. But war isn’t fought on paper. The Mustang’s superior range, reliability, and overwhelming numbers ensured it dominated the skies. While the Dora was Germany’s last great piston fighter, the P-51 Mustang proved to be the complete package—fast, long-legged, and lethal.
