Precious Metal P-51D Mustang Impresses Air Race Crowd

She’s a Real Beast!

This footage features the mighty P-51D (XR) Mustang during a 2013 qualifying run.

Those counter-rotating props are incredible, and so is that massive RR Griffon engine. That sweet sound of forced induction V12 definitely sent down chills! It’s also a real feat of engineering to see this warbird still flying and airworthy.

It’s absolutely spectacular. Those contra-props gave the plane a distinct sound since those Griffon cylinders have a different firing order than the standard Merlin.
