Sky-Legends Meet Again

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Gatineau-Ottawa Air Show delighted spectators with a rare tribute to aerial history. Three of the most famous fighter aircraft from World War II—Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, and P-51D Mustang—flew together in close formation as part of the “Victory Flight” display. People gathered on the grounds and by the fences, many holding cameras, as these war-birds roared into the sky in perfect formation. The event reminded everyone of the role these machines played in defending freedoms nearly eighty years ago.

These aircraft did more than fly. Each represented a story of innovation, courage, and adaptation. The Spitfire, with its graceful lines and elliptical wings, was built to intercept threats with agility and speed. The Hurricane, more robust, handled damage well and was a backbone during early bombardment raids. The P-51D Mustang, fast and long-ranged, escorted bombers deep into enemy territory so they could get their missions done. Each plane in the formation carried not only fuel and crew but the hopes and fears of nations at war.

What It Meant for Attendees

From below the flight path people felt the tremor of engines, heard the throaty roar of propellers, and saw sunlight glint off polished surfaces. Children pointed, veterans saluted, photographers framed images that will be shared again and again. Watching the three side by side made clear how designs varied: one optimized for tight turning, another for durability, the third for range. The formation also honored those who flew in them, many of whom have now passed on, but whose service remains visible in every lift-off.

Vintage Wings of Canada helped make this display possible. The group cares for historic aircraft, restoring and flying them in real condition. By preserving machines like these Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Mustangs, they keep alive the sound, smell, and sight of what aviation once was.
