This particular F6F-3 Hellcat came off the production line during WW2 and was modified in secret. Little is known about the actual modifications, but a new instrument panel and radar pod were installed.

Most notably, the F6F-3N variant had an AIA or AN/APS-6 radar designed to hone in on targets.

After the war, this Hellcat showcased aviation history at airshows until 2002. After her stint at shows, the Hellcat was displayed as a “Day Fighter” (even though it was a night fighter variant) for the next decade.

Nowadays, this Hellcat has been restored to the highest standard of her stock condition. The restoration team is hoping that the Hellcat (Bu. 41476) will tell the story of WW2-era naval aviation and the important role the night nighters played during the war.
