Spitfire MJ444 First Engine Run

On May 11th, 2024, an unforgettable moment unfolded as the legendary Merlin engine of the Spitfire MJ444 roared to life for the first time in its fully assembled airframe.

Following a successful test run earlier in the week, the MJ444 Supporters witnessed history in motion as the iconic sound of the Rolls-Royce Merlin filled the air.

Devin Anscomb had the rare opportunity to sit in the rear cockpit, while ARCo’s Martin ‘Mo’ Overall expertly handled the controls, ensuring the powerful aircraft stayed grounded.

The startup begins with the distinctive whine of the starter before the Merlin engine bursts into a growl – unmistakable to anyone familiar with the legendary fighter.
