Paramount Just Confirmed Top Gun 3 and Here Is Everything We Know

Paramount Pictures officially confirmed Top Gun 3 during its annual CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, with Tom Cruise returning as Pete Maverick Mitchell and Jerry Bruckheimer back as producer. The announcement ends years of speculation following the massive success of Top Gun Maverick, which grossed $1.5 billion at the global box office against a $170 million production budget in 2022.

Where the Story Left Off

Top Gun Maverick brought Cruise back to the role 36 years after the 1986 original, returning his character to the Naval Air Station North Island flight school to train a group of young pilots for a high-risk strike mission against a uranium enrichment facility defended by fifth-generation fighters depicted as Su-57s. The film introduced Bradley Rooster Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, as the son of Maverick’s late RIO and best friend Nick Goose Bradshaw. Their relationship formed the emotional core of the sequel alongside the incorporation of Val Kilmer’s real-life throat cancer into his character Tom Iceman Kazansky, whose arc with Maverick provided the film’s most grounded dramatic moments. Kilmer died in 2025, making Maverick his final film appearance.

Bruckheimer confirmed in 2024 that a storyline had been pitched to Cruise and that he liked it. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Maverick with Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, is attached to the third film.

What Top Gun 3 Might Look Like

Mitchell held the rank of Captain in Maverick. Whether Top Gun 3 promotes him to Rear Admiral and shifts focus toward Rooster’s generation remains unknown. The adversary aircraft and setting have not been revealed. Given that the franchise has now addressed both the Cold War threat environment and a post-Cold War near-peer scenario, the third film will need to find a new context for the same combination of personal stakes and authentic aviation spectacle that made Maverick one of the highest-grossing films of 2022.
