Val Kilmer, the actor famous for his roles in blockbuster movies like “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “Tombstone,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65. The New York Times reported that Kilmer died of pneumonia in Los Angeles. His daughter, Mercedes, confirmed the news.

Kilmer’s Battle with Health and Return as Iceman

In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer but successfully recovered, according to his daughter. Despite his health challenges, Kilmer continued to work. He recently reprised his iconic role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. Although able to portray Iceman again, Kilmer faced difficulties due to a tracheostomy, which required him to use a breathing tube. In a 2021 interview with People Magazine, he explained, “I can’t speak without plugging this hole [in his throat]. You have to make the choice to breathe or to eat. It’s an obstacle that is very present with whoever sees me.”

Kilmer shared a strong bond with his co-star Tom Cruise, and when they reunited for “Maverick,” it felt seamless. “It was like no time had passed at all,” Kilmer told Entertainment Weekly. “We blew a lot of takes laughing so much. It was really fun … special.”
