VIDEO Shows Delta Flight Returning to São Paulo After Engine Explodes During Takeoff

A Delta Air Lines flight departing São Paulo was forced to return shortly after takeoff when passengers and crew experienced an unexpected engine issue during the aircraft’s climb. Video recorded from inside the cabin later circulated online, showing the tense moments as the aircraft stabilized before safely heading back to the airport.

Delta Flight 104, operated by an Airbus A330-300, had departed São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport on a scheduled overnight service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Shortly after becoming airborne, the crew detected abnormal performance in the aircraft’s left engine, later identified as a compressor stall, a condition that can cause loud noises, vibration, and visible flashes from the engine exhaust.

Emergency Decision and Safe Return

Following standard aviation procedures, the pilots declared an emergency and discontinued the climb. Air traffic controllers cleared the aircraft to return to Guarulhos while the crew ran checklists designed for engine malfunctions. Modern airliners are built with redundant systems, allowing them to continue flying safely even after losing full power from one engine.

The Airbus A330 circled briefly to manage fuel weight before landing. Airport Rescue and Firefighting teams positioned themselves along the runway as a precaution, which is routine during engine-related returns. The aircraft landed without further complications, and officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

Airline Response and Passenger Handling

Delta Air Lines later released a statement addressing the incident and reaffirming safety protocols. “Delta Flight 104 from Sao Paulo to Atlanta returned to the airport shortly after takeoff on Sunday night after a mechanical problem with the aircraft’s left engine… The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels.”

After landing, passengers exited the aircraft using airport buses and were transported back to the terminal building. Airline staff assisted travelers with rebooking options and overnight accommodations where necessary. Maintenance teams began inspecting the aircraft to determine the precise cause of the malfunction.

Understanding Compressor Stall Events

A compressor stall occurs when airflow through a jet engine becomes unstable, disrupting combustion and reducing thrust. While dramatic in appearance and sound, pilots are extensively trained to respond quickly, and aircraft certification standards require safe operation under such conditions.

The Airbus A330 family has operated worldwide since the 1990s and is designed to fly long distances on a single engine if required. Aviation investigators and airline engineers will review flight data, engine performance records, and maintenance history as part of the ongoing examination into the incident.
