Cart Start Method

B-52 Stratofortress crews have an innovative option for a rapid engine startup: the explosive Cart Start method. Normally, warming up the massive Cold War-era bomber takes about an hour. However, with this method, the process is shortened to just ten minutes.

To initiate a Cart Start, crew members insert small, controlled explosive charges into two of the aircraft’s eight engines. When detonated, these charges provide an immediate burst of energy to jumpstart the engines, allowing for a rapid takeoff. This method was developed to ensure B-52s could be airborne swiftly in case of an urgent threat, a vital capability during high-stakes moments of the Cold War.

Despite its age, the B-52 remains a key asset in the U.S. Air Forceโs fleet. It boasts the highest mission-capable rate among the Air Force’s heavy bombers. Its combination of high subsonic speed performance and low operating costs makes the B-52 a durable and effective aircraft, solidifying its status as one of Americaโs most reliable strategic bombers.
