Why There’s A Notch On The MiG-15’s Wing Fence

YouTube / Air Zoo

What a Cool Feature!

One interesting feature of the MiG-15 is its swept wings, equipped with wing fences, which are designed to control airflow and improve handling. These fences improved stability, especially at high speeds and during sharp maneuvers. In the video, you can clearly see a large notch in the wing, and up close, there’s also a small flap indicator pin visible.
When taken off, the MiG-15 pilot could look at each wing to see if their landing gear was down, look at the nose to ensure that their front gear was down, and check if their flaps were down and ready for takeoff. This is definitely a classic Soviet practicality in design!
