Emergency Landing in Kent

A historic World War Two Spitfire was forced to land in a field in Kent after it lost engine power. The aircraft, Spitfire MJ627, made the emergency landing on Lower Wall Road in West Hythe on a Saturday evening (May 3, 2025). The aircraft is owned by the company Fly a Spitfire, which confirmed that both the pilot and the passenger were unharmed.

According to Kent Fire & Rescue Service, one of the two people on board was treated at the scene by paramedics. Two fire engines arrived shortly after the incident and helped to secure the aircraft. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has started an investigation to find out why the plane lost power.

History of the Aircraft

Spitfire MJ627 has a long and active history. It first entered service on 25 September 1944 and quickly saw combat. Just two days after entering action, the plane destroyed a German Messerschmitt Me 109 over Arnhem in the Netherlands. Since the war, the aircraft has been restored and used for historic flights, allowing passengers to experience flying in a real wartime plane.

This is not the first time MJ627 has had trouble in the air. In 1998, the aircraft made a landing without its wheels at Coventry Airport. More recently, in 2023, the cockpit canopy came loose during take-off from Biggin Hill Airport. Despite that, the pilot safely landed the plane, and no injuries were reported.

Fly a Spitfire stated that Saturdayโ€™s landing was made as a precaution. They have not released further details while the investigation continues. The plane remains an important example of British aviation history and continues to draw public interest due to its combat record and postwar activity.
