During the Second World War, the Pacific Ocean became the site of some of the largest naval battles in history. Aircraft carriers gained attention, but battleships still played a strong role, especially in shore bombardments and fleet protection. Four powerful warships stood out due to their size, weapons, and influence. These ships came from different countries, but each helped shape the course of naval warfare in the Pacific.

American Iowa-class Battleships

The United States Navy built the Iowa-class battleships with a focus on speed, armor, and firepower. Ships like the USS Iowa, USS New Jersey, USS Missouri, and USS Wisconsin could move faster than earlier battleships, reaching speeds over 30 knots. They carried nine 16-inch guns, which could fire shells weighing over a ton at targets more than 20 miles away. These ships also had strong anti-aircraft defenses, making them valuable even in battles with enemy aircraft.

In the Pacific, the Iowa-class battleships were used to escort aircraft carriers and bombard enemy-held islands ahead of amphibious landings. Japanese Battleship Yamato

Despite its size and power, Yamato spent most of the war with limited involvement. It was held back for much of the conflict due to the growing strength of American carrier groups. Japanese Battleship Musashi

Musashi was Yamato’s sister ship and shared nearly identical features. It carried the same 18.1-inch guns and had a displacement of over 70,000 tons. Like Yamato, it was built to fight large naval battles and withstand strong fire. Its massive size and thick armor made it difficult to damage using standard weapons. However, air power proved to be its greatest weakness.

Musashi took part in several missions during the war but was sunk in October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. American carrier aircraft launched repeated attacks, and after more than 20 torpedo hits and dozens of bombs, Musashi finally sank. Over 1,000 crew members were killed. Its loss highlighted the shift in naval power, where air attacks became more important than traditional battleship guns.
