Neil Armstrong’s fearless spirit was on full display during his test flight of the LLRV-1, an early Lunar Landing Research Vehicle. This experimental craft paved the way for safer moon landings, thanks in part to Armstrong’s willingness to push its limits.

Aircraft Operations Office Chief Joseph Algranti explained that the crash was caused by a loss of helium pressure, which disrupted altitude control. Strong winds added to the challenge, making the vehicle even harder to manage. Armstrong ejected just moments before the craft burst into flames and crashed—a split-second decision that saved his life.

This test flight ultimately led to the development of improved Lunar Landing Training Vehicles (LLTVs), which became instrumental in preparing astronauts for the challenges of lunar landings. The restored footage showcases Armstrong’s skill and composure as he fought to control the vehicle before ejecting to safety. A true testament to his bravery and contributions to space exploration.
