Infamous Corsair Torque Roll
In this footage, we get to witness the fatal torque roll crash of the FG-1D (F4U) Corsair on the USS Vella Gulf during WWII. This unfortunate incident happened on May 12, 1935, when VMF-513’s pilots were doing their practice off the coast of California near the North Island Naval station.
Two cameras on duty were able to capture the incident that day. One is located on the deck while the other cameraman is in the superstructure. While bought men caught the incident on camera.
This has got to be one of the clearest footage yet of the infamous Corsair torque roll. The pilot pitched up, stalled, and the torque took over-tragic. Unfortunately, a lot of Corsairs were lost in accidents as they were shot down by enemy planes, with thousands of fatal accident crashes happening regularly.
