Just As Planned

A 15.49-ft-long Airbus A340-600 RC plane flew during the RC Airliner Meeting in Germany this year. The 1:16 scale model of the second-longest passenger aircraft in the world was piloted by Lukas Kühnel.

The plane’s 12.93ft wingspan and long fuselage are supplemented with a turbine drive that gives enough thrust to the 55lb plane. Though it had no problems doing several laps over the airfield, its landing leaves much to be desired.

Its relatively long fuselage makes the plane hard to control during landings. Coupled with the light side wind, the Airbus failed to touch down on the “runway” as it landed. The aircraft still had too much lift, making it jump off the ground for a second.

Fortunately, the pilot stabilized the RC plane and touched down smoothly in the end.
