How Did Soviet Soldiers View American and British Planes?

Among the Lend-Lease equipment sent to the Soviet Union during World War II, aircraft stood out prominently, even earning recognition in Soviet propaganda. While these planes had their flaws, they played a critical role in the Soviet Air Forceโ€™s success.

The Airacobra

The American P-39 Airacobra became particularly well-known thanks to Soviet aces who highlighted its capabilities. Gregory Rechkalov, a Soviet ace, switched to the P-39 in late 1942 and went on to down between 53 and 59 enemy aircraft, plus several more in group combat. Before transitioning to the Airacobra, he had only three victories, underscoring the aircraft’s impact on Soviet air combat performance.

However, the P-39 was not without issues. Pilots noted that once its ammunition was depleted, the plane could lose balance and easily spin outโ€”a problem that persisted in its successor, the P-63 Kingcobra. Despite these flaws, the Airacobra was praised for its speed and powerful armament, making it comparable to the German Messerschmitt. The USSR received 4,423 P-39s and 2,397 P-63s, proving their value throughout the war.

The Hurricane

The British Hurricane received a far less favorable reception. Even by 1940, the Hurricane was outdated compared to German fighters. Between 1941 and 1944, the Soviet Union received 3,082 Hurricanes, but the plane failed to impress. Stalin famously criticized it, stating, โ€œThe Hurricanes are trashโ€”our pilots donโ€™t like them.โ€

Soviet pilots acknowledged the Hurricaneโ€™s shortcomings, particularly its slower speed compared to German aircraft. However, they appreciated its superior cockpit visibility and reliable radio systemsโ€”advantages that Soviet-made planes often lacked. Communication, in particular, became a key strength of Lend-Lease aircraft.
