Crazy Techniques WW2 Pilots Used To Eject

YouTube / Aviation_Insider

Pretty Crazy!

When pilots try to escape a crashing WWII plane, rather than utilizing ejector seats to escape from the airplane like newer aircraft do, because of the lack of ejector seats, airmen would manually release the cockpit canopy to create an exit.

After bailing out, the pilot would then freefall and deploy their parachute once clear of the aircraft. If they have difficulty getting out of the cockpit and the plane is still controllable, they would sometimes roll the plane upside down, release harnesses, and use the force of the roll to help bail themselves out.
