Midway, the 2019 war/action movie film, is based on the events that transpired during the Battle of Midway. And even though its filmmakers have embellished some scenes, one featured event was accurately depicted in the movie.

Bruno Gaido’s daring shooting of the damaged Japanese bomber about to crash into the USS Enterprise happened in the same way. All the details, from his jump into the cockpit to the Japanese bomber almost hitting the deck and clipping his plane, happened to him that day.

Even the words of his promotion by Admiral Halsey are also historically accurate!

The film did leave out the moment when Gaido decided to hide, thinking he would get punished for abandoning his order to take shelter.
