Incredible Friendship Between WW2 Adversaries Shorty Rankin and Gunther Rall
Shorty! Where’s My Thumb?
Flying a Focke-Wulf 190, Gunther Rall lost his thumb while being chased by four other pilots on P-47s. So much respect for both him and Shorty Rankin. Although we may think it’s the kind of friendship you don’t often see, Gunther says “It’s typical.” They’re both wonderful, brave men who performed their duties to their country. Besides, Gunther seems like a really cool guy (just listen to how he tells his story) so it’s not surprising that he and Shorty eventually became life-long friends. Imagine the kind of tales they share when they hung out. Though they have both already passed away, we definitely can learn a thing or two from them. They shared great insights and when Shorty teared up, it just broke our hearts.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful things Gunther said was, “We respected the other. He fought for his country, I also did.”
