NASA’s groundbreaking supersonic aircraft has reached a significant milestone as it inches closer to its inaugural flight. Captured in new photos, the X-59 supersonic plane now rests on the flight line at Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works facility in Palmdale, California, after being relocated from its construction site on June 19.

This crucial step initiates a series of ground tests, ensuring the X-59’s safety and readiness to take flight as part of NASA’s Quesst mission. The mission’s primary objective is to demonstrate the aircraft’s capability of flying faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1) without generating the disruptive sonic booms typical of supersonic planes.

Innovatively, NASA plans to fly the X-59 over various communities to collect data on human responses to the subdued sound produced during supersonic flight. This invaluable dataset will be shared with U.S. and international regulators to potentially permit commercial supersonic flight over land. The X-59’s anticipated mild thump, equivalent to a nearby car door closing, is a drastic improvement over the thunderous noise caused by earlier supersonic aircraft. By revolutionizing sound-based regulations, the X-59 could usher in a new era of faster, quieter, and more environmentally friendly commercial air travel.
