A Close Call

The last airworthy C-123K almost crashed while attempting to land in heavy crosswinds at the Geneseo Airshow last June 2023.

The video below shows the “Thunderpig” (Serial No. 54-664) after it flew several laps around the crowd before landing.

However, on recovery, the aircraft swerved right off the landing strip into the dirt, nearly causing its right wingtip to dig in.

Fortunately, the crew was able to correct the error in time before it became worse.

It was then able to taxi back to the ramp under its own power and the show continued.

The C-123K “Thunderpig” belongs to Air Heritage Inc. and is named after the nickname used by the 911th Airlift Wing based at Greater Pittsburgh Airport when they flew the C-123s.

Since then #54-664 has received a total restoration and is presently flying to as many air shows during the summer as it can.
