Not A Drone!
An unknown plane’s wing was seen protruding from a beach in Harlech, Wales, back in 2007. A concerned resident decided to take a picture to send it to the Ministry of Defense, but they claimed it was merely a “drone of some kind”.
Little did they know that this wing was part of an even bigger aircraft….
Unfazed by their response, the resident sent another copy to the local newspaper in hopes of finding a better answer.
Matt Rimmer, a local historian, quickly picked up the story and identified the sunken warbird. It was determined to be a P-38F Lightning.
Back in World War 2, this Lightning was piloted by Robert Elliot. The aircraft landed on the beach after both of its engines malfunctioned during an exercise.
Luckily, Elliot was able to bail out before it crashed on the beach. However, his squadron’s plan to salvage the plane was scrapped when his group was transferred to North Africa.
This, in turn, meant the aircraft was left there on the beach for 65 years until it was found again!
