After Two Years, They’re All Back Again.
At the beginning of July, people of Hawaii and San Diego were treated to one of the biggest Naval “shows.”Although not a show per se, RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise) is a biennial exercise involving the navies of 26 different nations.
RIMPAC is the largest maritime exercise in the world. Under the guidance of the Untied States Navy’s Pacific Fleet, its purpose is to “enhance interoperability between Pacific Rim armed forces, ostensibly as a means of promoting stability in the region to the benefit of all participating nations.”
The 2016 RIMPAC is the first to include India and controversially, China with whom there is massive tension in the South China Sea.
Starting in 1971, this is the 25th exercise conducted by nations ranging from New Zealand to the Netherlands. Overall, this exercise is composed of 45 ships and submarines, over 200 aircraft and 25,000 navy personnel.
This video is from a helicopter flyover featuring some of the ships and aircraft which made a stop in Hawaii. It’s a spectacular view which really puts into perspective the enormous size of all these fleets combined.
